What does this map show?

This map represents our best estimate at the average short term impact of air pollution, but there are many uncertainties in the data, both in the pollution levels at each point and the health effect of a pollutant concentration.
Each individual can react differently to air pollution because of their different genes and history.
The map shows how average number of days daily air quality is moderate and above in a year. This is based on the pollutants nitrogen dioxide(NO₂), Ozone(O₃) and Particles(PM10 and PM2.5).
Moderate air pollution can cause health symptoms in those with existing health conditions. This might be COPD, Heart Disease or Asthma, or might be those that are very young or elderly.
The map has been created by using an pollution model, combined with measurements for each day between 1^st January 2014 and 31^st December 2016.
The map shows elevated levels mostly on roads, but also in central London (driven by NO2 and particles) and a few very rural locations (driven by Ozone).

Some councils have opted not to be a member of the London Air Quality Network and support the services we bring to the public. As a result, information displayed these areas are limited compared to member boroughs.
The Daily Air Quality Index is based on levels that can have short term health effects. However, air pollution can have a long term health effect at levels that cause no short term effects.
